SANTA BARBARA, CA — Today, Justin Fareed for Congress campaign announced the release of a new television advertisement, titled, “My duty is to YOU,” highlighting the community spirit that is helping the area recover after the Thomas Fire and the Montecito debris flow, and the need for collaborative leadership in ongoing recovery efforts and wildfire prevention.
The ad stresses Fareed’s belief that our elected officials have a duty to not let political games get in the way of serving their constituents, particularly during times of crisis. On December 21, 2017, while the Thomas Fire was raging in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties, Salud Carbajal followed the orders of Nancy Pelosi and voted against a bill that carried critical disaster relief funding – risking the funds Central Coast residents so desperately needed.
In Congress, Carbajal has also voted against bipartisan measures that sought to prevent wildfires by implementing common-sense land management and forest protection practices on public lands. Even though numerous wildfires have hit the Central Coast this year, Carbajal doubled down on those votes in recent debates.
Carbajal has allied himself with two extremist groups that are obstructing the creation of a Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) for San Marcos Pass and the Eastern Goleta Valley. A complete CWPP is necessary for local fire departments to apply for state and federal fire prevention grants. At an October 2 Board of Supervisors meeting, Santa Barbara County Fire Chief Eric Peterson emphasized that the finalization of this plan is more necessary than ever, “predicting Carpinteria and Montecito could find themselves evacuated again this winter, depending on the rains.”
Fareed says that Carbajal has failed to show any leadership on the issue, simply opposing practical fire mitigation measures because special interests and party bosses demand he take that position. “Our people deserve resources, results, and a practical plan to keep this from happening again,” Fareed said. “My duty is to you, not politics or special interests. Just you.”
Justin Fareed is a candidate for California’s 24th Congressional District. He is President of a local small business, Pro Band Sports Industries, and a third-generation cattle rancher. Justin is a graduate of UCLA and has worked for a senior member of Congress; handling various matters pertaining to foreign relations, small business, agriculture, drafting and coordinating the movement of legislation, and building bipartisan consensus on Capitol Hill.
