GOLETA, CA – Today, the House voted on H.Res. 990, “Supporting the officers and personnel who carry out the important mission of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement.” Salud Carbajal voted “present,” adding uncertainty to whether or not he actually supports ICE. This, after tap-dancing around a question regarding his position on ICE in an interview two weeks ago. Seeing Carbajal’s “present” vote, Justin Fareed said, “taking a stand to support Immigrations and Customs Enforcement requires more than saying you’re in the room; it requires an affirmation on the record. Members of law enforcement deserve our full and unequivocal support.”

As a law enforcement entity, ICE has disrupted 40 percent of terrorist activity in our country since 9-11, arresting, on average, 10 terrorists a day. They have prevented over one million pounds of drugs from finding their way to our city streets. ICE has rescued hundreds of victims of child exploitation and human trafficking, saving 904 children in 2017 alone. Supporting ICE is a no-brainer.

“It’s astonishing that Salud Carbajal has effectively chosen to tuck and run from endorsing today’s resolution,” said Fareed. While the House was debating the resolution, California’s Junior Senator, Kamala Harris, who has enthusiastically endorsed Carbajal, attempted to set up road blocks in the Senate in an effort to keep Senators from expressing their support for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. She’s also called for the abolishment of ICE. For our federal lawmakers to abstain from supporting law enforcement is shameful; calling for the abolishment of law enforcement is repugnant. Carbajal’s proud presentation of his endorsement from Kamala Harris to voters reveals his true character, and his cowardice on the House floor shows his lack of commitment to the Rule of Law and the people who keep families safe at night.

The Central Coast can rest assured that this vote would have been an easy choice for Justin Fareed. “Supporting our law enforcement is the right thing to do for our families, for our children, and for our country,” Justin commented. “Sadly, Salud Carbajal sided with party bosses, and his decision reflects a voting record that stands in contrast with what you’ll hear him say on the radio or in the nightly news.”

When it comes to standing up for those who protect our families, you never have to wonder where Justin Fareed stands.
